After training in general medicine and gastroenterology in London, Jeremy Hallyar was looking for change. Together with his wife, he travelled to Mt Isa in 1992, lured to Australia by an image of Whitehaven beach in the Whitsundays on the back cover of the British Medical Journey. He spent 10 years at Mt Isa Hospital as Director of Medical Services and general physician. In this hard-drinking mining community, his interest in substance use problems developed. Since 2004, Jeremy has been Clinical Director of the Alcohol and Drug Service, Metro North Mental Health in Brisbane. His interests include treatment of opioid use disorder and the interface between addictions and mental health.
